Starting point:
A fiction focused on a couple who, unable to share a home, decide to seek out the idea of ‘home’ on their car trips.
Concept:
A continuous book that can be read in any direction, with no beginning or end, no front or back cover, and which, through its form, evokes the cinematic world of road movies, as well as the durational nature of video art.
Content:
On each double-page spread, three essays by three different authors coexist, each with its own delimited area of focus and each featuring a stylistic variation of the same typeface (Highway Gothic, a typeface used on motorway signs in the United States of America).
Their texts appeared as a response to thematic premises that guided the project, even before it was completed. Filipa Rosário developed a series of aphorisms centred on the road-movie format. Madalena Folgado took the concept of glossolalia as her starting point to construct poems in which sound and image dance across the pages. Meanwhile, the duo Sara&André composed a text drawing on quotations from other authors that reflect on the idea of being together and doing things together. At the centre, rotating independently of the rest of the book, a rectangular display presents images by Joana Patrão and Tiago Madaleno, which navigate between abstraction and recognition, the mechanical and the organic, the car and the landscape. Finally, the white screen-printing brings all the elements together, as if the text and image were part of the same roadside painting.
This book is part of the project with the same name presented at the School of Arts – UCP, Porto, a video and sound installation that was on display between January and February 2026.
