bio: Tiago Madaleno (1992, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal).
Lives and works in Porto.
 

Tiago Madaleno is an artist whose approach to artmaking is transdisciplinary. His creative process attempts to establish a dialogue between different medias’ histories, properties and specificities, in order to build fictional worlds that reflect upon image-making, language and performance.
 
He has a Bachelor’s (2014) and a Master’s degree (2016) in Fine Arts from FBAUP, Porto, and has exhibited regularly since 2013.

In 2022, he made the mural painting A Leaf in the Pocket (2022), commissioned by the Serralves Foundation, Porto, within the scope of their project ‘Windows to the World’ and carried out at the Porto Penitentiary Institution (Custóias), Matosinhos.

 

Still in 2022, he performed The outside of the hand, a live streaming reading performance for Interact Magazine #37, org. Luís Lima and Alexandra João Martins. In 2019, he began the street performance Portugal Tour in a Gazebo, that already took place at Festa das Cruzes (Barcelos), Bons Sons (Cem Soldos) and Noite Branca (Braga).
 

His work has been supported and distinguished with several prizes and mentions, such as the NOVO BANCO Revelação award 2017, promoted by the Serralves Foundation. In 2023, he was shortlisted for 13º Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Prize and was distinguished with the Grupo dos Amigos da Biblioteca-Museu Acquisition Prize. In 2019, he received the artistic grant Criatório, awarded by the Porto City Council, for the research and production of the project A Garden at Night. In 2017, he was distinguished with the Viana de Lima/Esposende City Council Prize for academic merit.


He also dedicates himself to publishing and artist books. Highlight for the artist edition N.O.R.W.A.Y. (2023), Museu do Porto, and for the publications Glossolalia (in collaboration with Joana Patrão), independent publishing and UCP-Press, The home fires (2022) and A Garden at Night (2020), Rampa Editions.


His work is represented in several public and private collections, such as Contemporary Art Collection from the Portuguese Republic (CACE), MAAT - Fundação EDP, Culturgest - Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Porto City Council, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Museum Collection, Artworks, Esposende City Council and private owners.

Between 2015 and 2016, he was part of the team that curated 11 exhibitions for Galeria Painel (in collaboration with Catarina Real, José Costa and Luís Ramos). A partnership between FBAUP and ISPUP.
